We talk about you all on a regular basis. Your ears are probably burning when we talk to other companies, and they say, well, what what can we do? We talk about what Averitt does. We talk about the amazing participation and how you raise the bar every year. Thinking of what you raised last year in twenty three and what you just you've done it with today is phenomenal. And we cannot do what we do without you. So I'd just like to say thank you for being here. So today, we're at St. Jude Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. I've been given the wonderful opportunity to come participate in our donation this year of 1.75 million dollars to St. Jude. To me, my experience here today at St. Jude has been a wonderful experience. Of course, I've been here before, so it just brings back memories for me. My little brother was diagnosed with leukemia when he was ten years old. So it does touch me a little bit. Yeah. Yeah. It it hits the heart. The experience today, I guess, started when my wife, she came to do clinicals in 2006 here. And she told me, she said, if you ever get the opportunity to, experience the the special place that St. Jude is, you need to take that opportunity. St Jude to me is like what I would call in Memphis because I'm from Memphis. It's our little piece of heaven. St Jude is what keeps that beam of light and it keeps God saving us. October first will mark twenty five years since I stepped foot in the in the doors of St Jude. I was just a thirteen year old girl with a lot of dreams, happy life. You can only imagine, with three words, "you have cancer." My whole world changed. It's wonderful to see the work that's being done and the impact of everybody's one dollar participation and the power that it has to impact the kids of the world, not just domestically, but international also. I was told today that you guys have been partners for thirty years, which means that you saved my life twenty five years ago. Every dollar counts, and you guys are looking at it. It's one dollar per paycheck, and this place is real. Meeting the speaker today, it's real. Everybody has had cancer touch them at least one way in their life. I just wish everybody could see the good one dollar can do.
The mission of Averitt Cares for Kids is to give back to our communities and help make a difference in the lives of others. In an effort to focus entirely on children, we updated the name of the program in 2007 from “Averitt Cares” to “Averitt Cares for Kids.” In doing so, we pledged that all future contributions will benefit causes that improve and save the lives of children.
The program roots date back to 1986 when Averitt’s associates decided they wanted to give something back to the company in a tangible way. They decided to purchase a new trailer and presented it to Averitt Chairman and CEO Gary Sasser as their gift of thanks. The project generated so much pride and enthusiasm that associates decided to embark on a similar project the following year. This time, Gary recommended instead that associates use their contributions to give to the less fortunate. The result was the formation of Averitt Express Associate Charities, now known as Averitt Cares for Kids.
At the time the program was formed, it was one of the first associate-funded, charitable-giving organizations of its kind. Upon its introduction, it was profiled on the front page of The Wall Street Journal.
The program is funded through associate contributions, as well as through company contributions made in recognition of associates' accomplishments, participation in Team Up Community Challenge projects, and life events.
Since 1986, Averitt Cares for Kids has donated more than $17 million to charities.
Since 1990, "Averitt Cares for Kids'" contributions have been designated by Averitt associates to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. St. Jude is the leader in research, treatment and cure for catastrophic childhood disease, helping children and their families throughout the world.
In 1997, "Averitt Cares for Kids" announced a $1.5 million endowment to fund a leukemia and lymphoma clinic at the hospital, That clinic is now known as the "Averitt Express Leukemia and Lymphoma Clinic." Eighty percent of all St. Jude patients visit the clinic at some point during their treatment. Hundreds of patients visit the clinic every day.
We’re proud to say St. Jude's has named Averitt Cares for Kids "Employee-Giving Organization of the Year" on several occasions, including 1999 and 2010 and 2020.
Averitt Cares for Kids' contribution of $1,750,001 to St. Jude in 2024 was our largest contribution in the program's history, and was also the largest employee-generated contribution ever for the hospital.
Hi, everyone at Averitt. It's Rick Shadyac with ALSAC St. Jude. You are such a vital member of our St. Jude family. This year, through your associate participation in the Averitt Cares for Kids program, you raised a spectacular 1.5 million dollars. That's an amazing number, and it's all because of your Power of One program. What an extraordinary level of engagement that is. It's no surprise you received the 2024 Workplace Giving Partner of the Year award. We are all so inspired by your creative ways of supporting St. Jude through team up challenges, annual softball tournaments, and the donation of Hot Wheels for the children. This incredible support has helped St. Jude reach its arms around the world to embrace generations of kids and give them a second chance at life. You know, this time of year, more than anything, is about family. And I want you to know today that through our ongoing work together on behalf of the patients of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, you are family. Families have history, and for St. Jude that legacy is rich, dating back to nineteen sixty two when we first opened our doors. Back then, childhood cancer was considered mostly incurable. But in the years since, St. Jude has helped push the overall survival rate from twenty percent to more than eighty percent, and we won't stop until no child dies from cancer. Families have purpose, and for us that purpose is to continue our groundbreaking research and provide vital medical treatments to find cures and save children's lives. And St. Jude shares its breakthroughs, so each child saved at St. Jude means countless more kids saved around the globe. Families have hope, and at St. Jude, that hope is a beacon in the darkness. With you by our side, we've been able to keep that fundamental promise of St. Jude founder, Danny Thomas, that families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing, or food, so they can focus on helping their child live. And so we stand together as families do best, united in this beautiful mission, ensuring the first class care our kids receive today will be there for the patients of tomorrow. On behalf of everyone at St. Jude, especially the kids and families in our care, thank you. Thank you for your support of this life saving, world changing mission.
